Ashwaganda (Withania Somnifera) a.k.a. Winter Cherry, Indian Ginseng or Chinese lantern plant is a plant in Solanaceae or nightshade family. It grows as a stout shrub that reaches a height of about 5.5ft.

Like the tomato, which belongs to the same family, Ashwagandha bears yellow flowers and red fruit, though its fruit is berry-like in size and shape. Ashwagandha grows prolifically in India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

The use of Ashwaganda in Ayurvedic medicine extends back 3000 to 4000 years to the teachings of an esteemed rishi (sage). Fruits, leaves and seeds of the plant have been traditionally used for the Ayurvedic system as aphrodisiacs, diuretics and for treating memory loss.

The roots and berries of the plant are used in herbal medicine for sexual vitality as well. Some herbalists refer to Ashwaganda as Indian ginseng, since it is used in ayurvedic medicine in a way similar to that ginseng is used in traditional Chinese medicine.

• Robin Lane Fox, in his biography of Alexander the Great claims Ashwaganda was used in wine in ancient times to increase sexual stamina.

All About White Willow…

• White Willow (Salix Alba) is a species of willow tree native to Europe and western/central Asia.
• The name derives from the white tone of the leaves, paler than most other willows, due to a covering of very fine silky white hairs.
• The white willow was introduced to the United States from Europe and can be found next to waterways throughout the US.
• The bark of the White Willow is the part of the tree which contains important chemical compounds used in medicine, and is easily removed in the spring when the sap begins to flow.

A Cure for What Ails Ya’ -or- Did you know where Aspirin came from?

• White Willow has been used for centuries in successful relief of pain and reduction of fever. In fact it dates back to the time of Hippocrates (400 BC) when patients were advised to chew on the bark to reduce fever and inflammation.
• The bark of White Willow contains the primary medicinal constituent salicin, which is a chemical similar to aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) and is responsible for the pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects of the herb.
• White Willow, though slower than aspirin to achieve an effect, tends to last longer than the synthetic forms of the chemical. Natural salicylic acid from White Willow is nearly as potent as aspirin, but salicin from White Willow does not cause gastric or intestinal upset

• The Celtic tradition uses a tree alphabet and assigns tree associations to the wheel of the year in an astrological system. In magical associations, White Willow represents romantic love, healing, protection and fertility.
